twestivalbeirutamman-2010

Last year, hundreds of people in 202 international cities came together to organize Twestival, a community-fundraising event that gathers offline the most active people online (mainly on twitter).

The aim of the global event was to support and raise funds for @charitywater, an NGO that helps the almost 1 billion (or 1 in 6 people) in the world who don’t have access to clean and safe drinking water. Over 1,000 volunteers and 10,000 donors fundraised $250k+, which resulted in more than 55 wells in Uganda, Ethiopia and India having a direct impact for over 17,000 people.

By hosting local events to have fun and create awareness, Twestival™ (or Twitter Festival) uses social media for social good. All of the local events are organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all ticket sales and donations go directly to projects.

This year, on Thursday 25 March 2010, the worldwide online community will come together again, but this time to support education.

At least 72 million people around the world are not enrolled in school, with girls accounting to 55% of the worldwide out-of-school population.

With such unjust figures increasing, Twestival global team and local organizers have selected @Concern Worldwide to be the recipient of the funds that will be raised this year because of their comprehensive and well-respected approach to education. This is an issue that involves many different elements- hunger, water, teacher training, building of schools, etc. We hope to use the power of our global event fundraising and social media influence as a vehicle to give people insight into this cause on a deeper level. For more information, refer to the Concern factsheet.

A non-governmental, international humanitarian organization founded in 1968, Concern is dedicated to the reduction of suffering and works towards the ultimate elimination of poverty. Their mission is to help people living in extreme poverty achieve major improvements in their lives - improvements they can sustain without ongoing support.

In the Levant region, Beirut and Amman will be taking part in this global initiative, leveraging on the fact that they are both one of the most active Arab countries on Twitter and have done a great job in pulling a successful local Twestival in September 2009.

The Lebanese and Jordanian joint Twestival will take place at the ArabNet conference, the premiere international conference about the web industry that will is being staged on that same day in Beirut. Since most of the active tweeps in both countries will be attending the conference, it was decided to create a joint Twestival on the first day of the conference, which happens to be on March 25, the day when the Global Twestival coincides.

Because education is the most powerful weapon that can actually empower individuals and provide them with the right tools in their quest change the world, their world at least, we are not only excited about this initiative, but also very keen on making it a phenomenal success.

On March 25, the online community of the world will gather offline to support this very important cause. Join us and let’s together create a difference and help make this world a better place. The more we are, the louder we can echo our Lebanese and Jordanian voices around the world, and the greater impact we can achieve.

Posted on: 22 September 2009 at 1143 - Comment

Posted on: 16 September 2009 at 1344 - Comment

Thank you…

Do something for your community: The Live Aid of the digital world, Twestival (a Twitter-Festival), is about to happen again!

On Sunday September 13, twitterers, sponsors and others will get together at 4p.m. in the Rawda Café (near Sporting Club) in Ras Beirut for a charity fund-raising event. Twestival Beirut will run for the first time simultaneously in parallel with more than 133 countries worldwide.

It all started in London about a year ago. Amanda Rose, a Canadian entrepreneur and social media graduate student, came up with the idea of bringing together twitterers in the offline world to have fun, exchange technology tips and do something good. Organized in two weeks, the first twestival attracted 250 people who connected via twitter and raised money for a homeless charity in London. With £1000 raised and 14 boxes of canned food packed, the team started planning the idea of simultaneously hosting Twestivals all around the world.

12 months later and Twestival has literally gone global. From Rio de Janeiro to Toronto to Dubai to Copenhagen to Beirut – are celebrating Twestivals that will raise money for local causes.

In Beirut, Twestival is supporting IndyACT, The League of Independent Activists, in its continuous campaigns to fight the increasing climate change crisis. There is less than 3 months to Copenhagen where world leaders will come together in the most important meeting of a generation to decide if they will save the planet or not.

Twestival Beirut with the help of volunteers and civil society will help change that. They will call for climate change action and moving away from the path of destruction, continued poverty and despair.

With Billions on email lists, 100+ Million blogs, 50 million Facebook users, 55 Million users/month on YouTube, 14 Million twitterers; roughly 25% of the world’s population is online. All is needed is true leadership and commitment to humanity and its future. IndyACT has always realized the immense potential of real-time social media particularly for advocacy and charity work.

Twestival Beirut and IndyACT call on everyone whether media savvy or not, to buy the ticket, invite their friends on twitter and other social networking sites and GET INVOLVED!

It is about time they started following on the negotiations and the role of their governments in these negotiations, as well as to seriously commit to the cause and the critical urgency of the matter and help push for an ambitious, fair and binding climate change agreement!

IndyACT’s key Dates to take reference of:

- 21 September (coinciding with world leaders meeting in NY): Global Wake-Up Call: Calling people to come with their alarm clocks, musical instruments, horns, etc. and meet as at Ain Al-Mreiseh at 8pm facing McDonalds. Our aim is to make as much noise as possible to remind our leaders to Act Against Climate Change!
- 24 October (coinciding with Global Day of Action Against Climate Change): Screening of Age of Stupid Blockbuster Movie.
- Copenhagen’s Final Push: IndyACT will be taking around 10 journalists and bloggers from around the Arab region to Copenhagen to cover the negotiation process and be witnesses to human stories affected by climate change.

What is Twestival Beirut?
It’s an event to raise money to help support our community through one Lebanese non-profit/charity, yet to select. 100% of the profit on this event will go to this NGO.

A great opportunity to connect with people in the twitter community, mainly through Twitleb (the Twitter community in Lebanon) @twitleb

How can we do that?
A committee of volunteers will share ideas, suggestions and all tasks to make this first Twestival Beirut successful. Majority will be crowdsourced using Twitter.

How to chose the right NGO?
The committee will suggest and vote for the NGO that will benefit from this local Twestival. Beirut.
A fundraising goal for this event will be set to help the NGO solve environmental issues in Lebanon: Think global and act local is the main tagline.

When?
The local Twestival in all registered countries/cities are planned to happen in September 10 – 13th, 2009.
